Disabled my domains under Adsense for domains today coz not bringing any profit.

Losing traffic

Found out there was a bug in my website that causes users unable to inform to their friends regarding the website... losing 50% traffic...

I dont really take note about it coz it has been find for months now. And usually, if there is a public holiday in certain countries, I will lose some a quite a large amount of traffic from those countries. However, this time, it has been for 5 days plus 50% drop (which is very unusual) and I have decided to investigate and found a major bug.

Bug fixed but the chain of visitors has been broken down.

Let's see how it is going to be tomorrow and after several days.

Hope they will return to normal (and increasing day by day).

New product launched.

Suddenly I got an idea and completed all the codings etc in 3 hours. :D

Implementing New Method of Sharing Stuff at Facebook

Instead of 'Like' why not full status at facebook. Just put a button where people can update their status and give comment at facebook instead of Like. I implemented it today coz 1 december, so I got 1 full month to see and compare with previous months. However, christmas and new year = holiday = less traffic at the end of the month.

Anyway, hope to get more exposure from facebook status (more traffic).

New myspace launched. Although I have abandoned myspace long time ago, by when they released the new version, I kinda like even thought I hate to the fact that you cant no longer modify your profile as your liking in which you can previously do for the past 10 years. Some dislike this changes but hey, profile customization what killed myspace. Those who have talents and good understanding on HTML can survive well in myspace but the problem is, most of us sucks in HTML, that why they opt to facebook which is more simple and straight forward not to forget the clean interface.

By the way, I like the new myspace coz they now implement the status update thingy into their system and 'Like' which means better virilization.

Better virilization system = better info sharing = better exposure = more quality traffic!

This weekend, maybe I will look into myspace to further see what this new myspace has to offer.

Once A Week

From this day, I decided that I want to check my Facebook, Myspace (maybe once a month for this), Adsense and Statcounter once a week.

You see for the past few months, I noticed that my productivity seems to drop and what I meant with this is that I noticed that I am spending more time on computer doing a lot of things but when I think back, most of them are worth nothing and I wasted my time a lot when I should be studying.

The major culprit is Facebook while Statcounter and Adsense as the 2nd and 3rd culprit.

I dont know why but Facebook seems very very boring but yet I still want to check it. It is an addiction.

So I google-ed 'facebook is boring' and from my observation, it is not me who feel the same. Anyway, here are some of thoughts that I agree with.

I cancelled my account shortly after singing up. i found it a big time-waster. as a freelancer i can’t imagine how i could possibly make a living and keep up with all the facebook activity. and then i realized that my friends who are really into facebook have office jobs with a lot more down time than i can afford.

You are right, it is really exciting when you initially sign up with Facebook and connect with old friends, but once the honeymoon period is over it does become boring (for many).

Couldn’t agree more with this post Grant. Facebook was a great 5 years ago, and has made some good changes, but overall, it’s another email tool and instant messaging tool wrapped into one login. If there was a way for new connections to be made then Facebook would have a greater appeal, and maybe then I wouldn’t log in b/c “I have to”

For me facebook is boring because... I like to see pictures (vacation etc)! But it seems people dont have time to upload pictures and it seems people are talking craps at facebook. And talking about craps...

Arguing on the internet is like running at the special olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.

My friends and people that I care usually update their statuses once a week so that's why I decided from now on, I am going to check once a week. CURE MY ADDICTION! Facebook wasted my time!

Sometimes I really like giving up making a lot of money. I think why not live in a simple life and enjoy my time. No need hardwork.

But when I see people bring their family to Australia, Europe etc, I feel like I want that too.

But when I see people living in comfortable but somehow quite expansive homes, I fell like I want that too.

But when I see people driving luxury cars and their family members look proud with it, I feel like I want that too.

Yes, if you want to make a list of I want this and that, there will be no end to it. But hey, I want my family to live in a comfortable life.

But work hard = too much pressure on me

Adsense still is the option. I need to explore more and find more ways...

Name Impact

"Dont judge a book from its cover". I do agree with this statement but the problem is, most of us judge a book from its cover. Lol.

This is the trend of 'facebook likes' I am using for one of my thing. At the beginning and at the middle, you can see a plateau. Later at the back, you can see a 45 degree increasing trend.

Here's what had happened.

1. At the beginning, I use some sort of funky name for my Like title

2. Then I try to promote the Like by updating status, that why you can see an increase.

3. But then, it cam back to plateau trend.

4. Later, I make the title more simple and straight to the point.

5. As a result, more Like per day.

Why did it returned to plateau at 3? That's what we call the appealing factor. You see, I just changed the title, not the content and you can see a tremendous change in Likes per day. Next time, make sure your title rocks.

I dont expect August will end this way

I thought I can at least my earnings for this month by 20 - 30% percent compared to last month but it seems it is impossible.

Despite having the same percentage of click, my ecpm drops.

Better luck next month.

Facebook Like Optimization (FLO) - 1 month after

As I said, I dont update my website, I just leave it there. After 1 year, I found that although this website works, it is losing steam day by day, which you can see from the graph below.

The culprit? I don't know but this is what I am think of.

1. Supposed that 10 person just got to know about my website. 8 (80%) are interested, 2 will ignore.

2. Supposed that these 8 person want to tell their friends about my website. But due to poor virilizing technique, each person will be able to pass down to 1 friend only.

3. From this 8 friends, only 80% (says 6) are interested. So there will be only 6 new friends to start again the chain.

4. And as time goes by, people get bored. So that 8 person (from 2) will leave, decreasing the number of visitor per day.

In simple words, more people are leaving than people staying and joining combined.

So by using facebook like button, this will enchance the spreading of the news at (2.). Supposed now 1 person able to pass the news to 3 person. So that will increase to 20 (80% of 24) instead of 6, and this will make the website grow.

Conclusion : FLO works right now and I hope this will last (although nothing last forever)!

Myspace is the new facebook?

Logged in to myspace and myspace offered me the new two column look. Love it but it much more of Facebook. So the old myspace, which was booming in 2003 something, is now dead.

*I was addicted to myspace log time ago. Lol.

Straight Forward in Names and Titles

I have this one website which I made (which I think quite useful) but did not managed to viral. Tried a lot of methods, including putting Facebook 'Like' but none seem to work, until 2 days ago, when I changed the name (as well as how it will appear when someone click Like).

Guess what, after months of failure, it managed to viral (via Facebook's 'Like' button).

Lesson : Whatever you do, your title should be straight forward to what you are offering. Don't choose funky name, unless you are doing movies or games ('A Shooting Enemy Game' would not do in this case)

Same goes as your blog name. And this blog name is bad example but never mind, this is like a diary which I won't monetize from it. :D

*Today I deleted quite a number of blogs I made 4 years back, when I was 17 and very naive in Adsense. I delete them coz I feel stupid having them around LOL. Previously, I thought making money from Adsense was piece of cake. Just make a lot of blogs and money will flow (I never make a dime from this method :D). Anyway, I snap all of them in jpeg format so that I can laugh back when I look at my previous stupidity later.

2. When someone click like, it is more of personal recommendation. *Do you know that mouth to mouth advertisement is the best advertisement on earth? It's the best because it is free and the response rate is good.

3. You dont need to wait for search engine to crawl your site

4. No competition and no slashing others on search engine rank building (SEO, backlinks etc). It is purely natural. So you won't get mad your rank drop etc coz someone used link farming etc.

5. Promote creativity. Good contents = more likes.

6. You dont have to wait for people to search the keywords

*However, SEO is still important. Do both and you'll get synergistic effect on your contents. :)

Facebook Like Optimization (FLO) can really beat SEO. Look at facebook ranking below from Alexa.com . At some countries, Facebook even beat giant search engines and at most countries, come out 2nd.

People do seo coz number one source for traffic is search engine. But since Facebook has changed this landscape, Facebook Like Optimization (FLO) is the alternative. Currently, the only FLO I can think of are these:

1. Content is power! And your title for Like should be tempting! Remember, in FLO, backlinks don't matter, how many people like your content is the main ingredient. Besides, you need constant Like. When 1 person click Like, he or she must able to get at least 1 of his friends to click Like too. If not, the cycle stops.

2. For blog, article etc, place your like at the end of your post. Dont put on top coz people read from top to bottom.

3. Dont't use dark color scheme when you are generating your button at http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like . Make is as natural and as intuitive as possible.

Alternative to SEO

Found a new good alternative to SEO! It's 'Like'.

I don't know SEO and I know how frustrating to get 1st place. I don't learn SEO because I believe that good links will get good back links. You don't need to build it. However, ever since Facebook allows you to put Like button at all over the web, not limited to Facebook, good content writers have another alternative to viralize their articles / websites etc.

Yesterday, sharing a link was a tedious process. You need to copy and paste somewhere, and then hopefully someone will do the same. Most link failed to viralize because most of us are lazy to copy and paste and continue copy and pasting others' stuff.

Facebook has eliminated this and simply all the steps with just a click! With one click, your friends will get notified and if they like what you like, they will continue to click like and then his friends will continue doing the same.

Sounds easy but here's the catch, your link will go down as users post new statuses. In SEO, your link will be there for a long period of time. So your post must be really good to make the link chains continue.

But once somebody like your link, expect huge click through because it is a personal-somebody you know recommendation. Friends as well as stalkers have higher tendency to visit the link.

If SEO fails you, try Like. I try this for a while and the increase in unique of visitors per day (not $$$) is amazing!

BSKL? I lose RM1000. Lol. If I knew I was very lucky last time, I will take out the capital so that will stay on profit no matter what. Anyway, I learnt a lot and I think I can predict which stock will go up and which will not after this. I think.

It's better to lose and learn know. RM5K is small.

Since some of my bucks is being stored in stock form, I cant show you how much I have right now. Wish me a better luck next time.

Past one month, I learned a lot from bursa. From sweet victory of 100% return of investment, today I come back to square one. Lolz.

Habitual Buying? Greedy?

Hurm, I do have my own lists of conditions when should I buy a stock. But problem is, I usually dont follow the lists coz there is greedy feelings in my mind. That's why a lot of times, when a stock should give me $$ turn to take away $$$ from me.

Maybe this is what we call greed. 'Orang tamak selalu rugi'.

To counter this problem, I am thinking of reciting these words 'Tamak itu perangkap' so that I will stick the plans. Lol. :p

May 2010 Post Mortem

Here's my earning for May 2010. Sorry no graphs for daily earnings and daily visitors coz I don't think they are relevant (and I am lazy too).

May 2010 KLSE: RM5240 + RM642.12

Lolz, I did hit around RM10,000 KLSE but since I am new and inexperienced, lost a lot (but at least I still has profit). Regret? Hurm, everytime I lose, I learn something. I believe, someday I can be a good investor. Just like how I start with Adsense. See my previous years earnings (click here).

I am not saying that I am expert in Adsense, in fact, I am still learning. What I want to say is, there is no such thing as easy money and in business, you need to try and try until you get your own formula and understand the 'art'.

Does my premium server hosting worth?

I did tell you guys that I signed up a new webhosting in US (at April 27th) after I fed up with server down with one of Malaysian's webhosting. Although the company charge more for less space etc, I think it is a good investment. No downtime and it cuts the loading time to 1/6!

Thinking of ditching my domains

My three domains for AFD don't do well this month, currently they provide $0.26. When the domains expired, surely will ditch AFD...

Good signs?

I made a number of 'useful stuff'. One of it has suffered unique visitors plateau for sometime but recently, I noticed it has been growing since a month ago.

I'm quite happy with this since its an early sign that people are using the stuff. :D

New Server

I just bought a new server from company B. Really cannot tahan with my current server (from company A). I subscribed my previous server (from company A) on 27th of x month and since today is 27th, I quickly bought a new server coz that's will make server subscription payment easier later.

Performance? Superb! See below.

The package which is around RM150 for 500mb, 30GB bandwidth

Don't mind about the price coz I just add RM50 and I don't use more than 30mb. LOLz.

What's more important is uptime and performance.

And you know what, when I did reverse ip, company A got 175 websites and this company (B) only got 63. Kinda good.

If not because of my home made vista gadget, I dont think they will note it. Now really need to change to steadfast...

Friendster is really dead

I did promote my website on friendster by making a group. I made it 1 year ago. However, despite the traffic, my Adsense dont change a lot coz friendster is dominated by Filipinos (very low cpc). Thus I don't really mind about it and just leave it there. Don't know what happened to the group now.

Lately, I noticed that my Adsense earning don't change much despite decreasing in traffic. Further inspection and by making graph, it is obvious that visitors referral from friendster dropped sharp to 1/5 compared few months before.

Which means, Filipinos are leaving friendster and since Philippines is friendster last fortress, and despite the new look, friendster is actually dying slowly. Kinda sad coz it is my first social network website.

Goodbye friendster.

Another plugin

Made another plugin. Hope this will increase my website pagerank.

This plugin is some sort of complicated, but hey, this teaches me how optimize my php script. My php script has been optimize and it loads 50x faster than before! Yup in milliseconds. Previously it still just a blink of the eye. So may not notice the difference much.

Regarding the previous plugin, the search results (when I google the plugin name) has increase from 14 to 2770.

Stock Market

I want to open an account at Public Bank. Saw my dad made 20% profit in just 2 months.

This makes me wonder... if someone can maintain that for every 2 months, in a year he made 120%!

I invest in mutual fund which gives around 10% annual return. Compared to the one above, if I maintain investing in mutual fund, I need 12 years!

It's so cool. But risky also. In internet, you just need RM150 for capital. In stocks, you need at least RM10K. Kinda thrill also. High risk, high return... but internet return is much more higher but very very low risk ehhh??

I really need a decent webhosting

I hosted at 2 companies and weirdly, these 2 companies suddenly gave me headache.

1. The X hosting. First, hosting down for 15 minutes. No big deal for me. But as a result of this failure, my mysql corrupted and I need to restore back and as them to restore back some of the databases coz I don't backup them. Then my tar.gz backups also lost, but they managed to restore back. Thumbs up. I thank the support for X company coz they really reply your message in less than 5 minutes.

2. The Y hosting. Since my package in X hosting don't have cronjob, I use Y's cronjob to 'cronjob' X hosting. But yesterday, I noticed that Y hosting don't do the cronjob that they usually do. So I check it out and notice the crontab is no longer there. Talked to the owner he said, "Since many account abuse our cronjob, we disable cronjob"... which really gave me a headache. But I talked to him that I really need cronjob (besides it is stated in my package that I will get cronjob) and at the end I get my cronjob back. Y hosting is good, but I don't really like the approach. I mean why not only disable those who abuse it, not all? Then why not send emails notifying us that he will disable the cronjob?

These 2 events gave me a sign that I really need a decent and responsible webhosting company because it is clearly that the 2 webhostings can't guarantee my site will be able to run smoothly without me monitoring it. I'm eyeing 'steadfast'. My package now is 3GB + 30 bandwidth. Steadfast only offer 500mb + 30GB bandwith but cost me 50% $$$ more. Really expensive but I think worth it coz my website actually less than 10mb. Really expensive but I think worth it coz I just want my website to up and running. Besides, the server is located at US. 90% of my visitors are US people.

So yesterday, without any hesitation, I applied CIMB e. Mastercard debit card so that I 'shop' the server later (maybe at the end of this year coz my package will be dead at that time).

For X and Y webservers. I don't mean they are not good (worth with the price), but I just want my website to run without any failure so that my visitors (US visitors particularly) can surf smoothly.

I got this website which has high number of visits from Philippines. Since Adsense don't do well in this country, I'm switching to Bidvertiser. Let's see how Bidvertiser perform in this country audience. :D

Made a wordpress plugin

Just made a wordpress plugin!

So what this got to do with Adsense?

You cannot sell your plugin. How you make money by making plugin?

It's true that wordpress plugins are free and you cannot sell them and you cannot put ads in them. This is because wordpress itself is free so they want anything 'wordpress' to be free.

So are you asking for donation?

Haven't decide yet but I don't put any donation button (yet!).

So what are you trying to tell us?

Just want to share my simply marketing strategy. Make a good plugin -> you'll get many install and may get many backlinks -> page rank increased tremendously -> more chances to get the first 10 search results -> more traffic -> increase in earnings :D

Right now if I google the plugin name only 14 results. Will see how it do later.

If this strategy fails what are you going to do? Do you know that top plugin developers don't earn much?

I currently on holiday now and I made this plugin for fun. Even if this strategy fails, I don't mind. I am like other developers, make plugins for fun, personal satisfaction and want to contribute something to the world (wordpress community to be specific). I just want to see my plugin flourish!

Unique visitors for March 2010...

Comment : My average earnings per day dropped compared to last month. I believe this is due to the unique visitors. I launched something on January 2010 and the 'heat' last until mid March 2010. I think now it hits plateau and equilibrium already coz after mid 2010, you can see I received quite a steady amount of visitors per day.

After nearly a year (I guess) of holding the payment, I will release the money this April because I'm on a break and got time to go to CIMB. Expecting to get RM7000+

This is far better than any investment. RM150 turns to RM7000++ Which is 4666% ++ return!

My spirit is going down

My faith to get financial freedom from Google Adsense has declined day by day ever since one of the main websites (which contribute a big portion of traffic to my website) changed its interface, and greatly reduced the exposure of the links to my website. My traffic seems to declined in a step ladder pattern.

A bit sad coz I thought I can get very rich (note the word 'very') from Adsense. But now Adsense is more like of extra pocket money.

Back to the books. Need to grad, then prepare to work with other people, being directed to do this and that :(

Just realized that know, 3pm (our time) is 12.00am for adsense. Yesterday it was 4pm. Couple of months before, I wonder why this is happening. After I googled pacific time, now I understand what is happening.

How Christmas Affected My Website Visits

*On the second half of January, I launched my new project. That's why there is a burst of traffic.

*Then you can see a drop early in January. I don't know what's that. New year public holiday effect?

What's happening at united states this week?

After a few weeks of steady visits growth, this week, the amount of visits drop tremendously, reminding me of Christmas week. I've check the united states holiday calendar but I can't find any holidays this week. Weird.

Hope it just another holiday or holiday-like phenomena and will recover as soon as possible.

This post serves me as a reminder what to expect on the future.

New record for CPC

Just now, I logged in to my adsense and it's kinda weird my earning suddenly jumped high. Further inspection shows that one on my website, which rarely gets click, made a big contribution today.

USD 5.54 for 1 click

Interesting is, this website holds the previous highest CPC record which is USD3.00+ something.

This website is highly targeting on something, that's why it hardly gets any click. But when someone clicks it, it made a tremendous amount of money. It gets high CPC ads but not very profitable. It gives profit, but not very much.

Jan 2010: New Adsense record! I earned USD341.40

For the first time I managed to earn beyond USD300! What's so special about this? In my country USD300 means 1000 bucks. So, quite happy.



My new project really helped me this time to double the income as well as the traffic. Here's the earning graph.

It seems my expectation for Jan was wrong (I expected to earn USD150, see previous post). But this month turned to be the best!

1000+ bucks (my country currency) without doing anything! That's cool!

Anyway, Adsense for domain don't give me profit much. I think I have wasted around 30 bucks for 3 domains. But it's good to have some experience on AFD.

Problem With High Paying Adsense Keywords

I've seen many people eager to search and get adsense high paying keyword list. Nothing wrong with that but I don't really into hunting those keywords because :

1. The number of clicks is around 1 - 3 per day
2. too many competitors (everybody crazing to get easy bucks from adsense)
3. the market is too narrow

I make websites that are appealing to the general audience. So number 3 is a no for me.

I don't know CEO much. So my butt will be kicked by CEO expert. 2 is not for met.

Factor 1 plus factor 2 = chances to get click is almost 0.

That's why I don't fancy hunting high paying keywords or niche...

2010 resolution?

It's already 20th Jan! Before it I forget, better write down my expectation for this year. Using math, I think I can earn USD15 by the end of Dec 2010.. So my 2010 resolution is:

And here's my visitors graph. As you can see, there lines dived during around christmas and new year. For the new year, I am not 100% sure whether it due to new year but since people say 23rd to 2nd Jan is the worst period for adsense publisher, maybe it is... who knows.
